I’m pretty obsessed with movies, but I don’t think I will ever go this far.
Thanks to the Cinema Obsessed girls, I discovered learnnavi.org. On this site, you can literally learn the language spoken in James Cameron’s “Avatar.” It is literally just like learning Spanish, French, Latin, or whatever language you take. There are noun declensions and verb conjugations. There is vocabulary. If you had any doubts that Cameron didn’t pull out all the stops for the movie, they will vanish after 30 seconds on this site.
I might pick up a few casual words from the Na’vi vocabulary. I’d like to see the look on someone’s face when I say “irayo,” and they ask what the heck I just said. The look would probably be even better once I’ve told them that I have just thanked them in Na’vi.
Check out the site by clicking on the logo below. It’s fun to explore and to see the extent of “Avatar.” Clicking on it doesn’t make you a nerd…

That is just a little bit sad. Like the depression that many claim to have felt after leaving the cinema (I’m not kidding, the fans whining got so loud that CNN did a feature on “Post Avatar Depression”).
I find it crazy that he took the time to work on small details like creating a new language for the film when maybe he should of spent the time actually writing (or at least improving) a good script for Avatar. So many plot holes and bad dialogue…so many.
Yeah, seen this a while back and it reminded of some sites that popped up after LotR came out. Granted, Tolkien did a shit-load of the work on that one, but it sure was interesting to look over.
I actually know someone who speaks fluent Elfish … not even kidding. It’s awesome.
When I was twelve, I considered learning Klingon. It’s as sad as it sounds.
ps, I’ve added you to my blogroll. Qapla!
Darren – Not sad – totally awesome! I think you, Marshall and us gals should get together and form a Na’vi language club. Who cares what everyone else thinks?! Who’s in?
We should start our own blog to chronicle our learning of Na’vi, with the goal to learn the language in 2 years? Be able to have a simple conversation in 1 year? Who knows where this could take us … talk about great a podcast/YouTube videos.
“Three ordinary bloggers take on one of the biggest challenges the Internet has ever seen – learning Na’vi.”
I might learn Jawa…
